Many RC vehicle manufacturers claim their products are waterproof. But are the brushless motors inside really waterproof? Let’s explore the reality behind waterproof brushless motors.

There are two main types of brushless motors used in RC applications:

Sensorless and Sensored. Sensorless brushless motors can operate fully submerged without electrical issues. However, water can still penetrate the motor and cause problems over time.

The shaft in brushless motors is supported by bearings. Typical RC motor bearings are shielded but not completely sealed. Water contains particles that can enter the bearings, causing wear. Worn bearings allow the rotor to contact the stator, leading to permanent damage.

So while brushless motors are water resistant, they aren’t truly waterproof. With extended water exposure, moisture will find its way into even shielded bearings. This gradual wearing of the bearings directly impacts the motor’s lifespan.

To maximize brushless motor life for RC boats and other wet applications, take steps to limit water exposure:

  • Use a marine-grade waterproof grease on the bearings
  • Rinse motors with fresh water after use in dirty or salty water
  • Remove the motor and dry it out completely between uses
  • Periodically disassemble and clean motors after heavy water use

While advertised as waterproof, the reality is RC brushless motors still need maintenance and care around water. Take proper precautions and your motors will enjoy long, trouble-free operation.

Brushless motors are a great technology that has enabled major advancements in RC vehicles. However, while often advertised as waterproof, the reality is that exposure to water can still damage brushless motors over time. The bearings are a weak point that allow moisture and contaminants to penetrate the motor. With proper maintenance like lubrication, rinsing, and drying, you can maximize the lifespan of your brushless motors. But recognize their limitations – they are water resistant, not fully waterproof. Take steps to limit water exposure and your brushless motors will provide long, reliable performance.
